Extended School Year

The support for the ESY Program has annually been achieved in providing our students with additional school days for student success and to help maintain needed educational skills during the summer months. We appreciate your assistance in identifying students in need of ESY services.
To adequately verify and document placement for each student, please have your district complete the online registration form and submit it by March 29th, 2021 to the ARIN IU 28 office.
Thank you for your assistance annually in identifying students in need of ESY services and for providing the appropriate information. Feel free to contact me if you have any questions regarding this information at (724)463-5300 ext. 1246 or [email protected]
ESY services are special education and related services provided to students with disabilities beyond the framework of the usual school year. The Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA), is a federal special education law that indicates school districts, intermediate units, and charter schools must provide these services if a student requires them to receive a Free Appropriate Public Educations (FAPE). In some cases, with summer break, students with disabilities result in losing or struggling to retain many of their basic skills. ESY services are designed to address such needs.
Individual IEP teams address the need for ESY services during the school year. Such decisions are based upon feedback from team members and the parents of students involved. Although local districts may access a wide variety of means to provide such services, ARIN IU 28 implements three programs to assist districts and parents in these cases.

3 ESY Programs:

  1. Home-based - Assigned Special Education teachers set up appointments with parents/guardians to provide ESY services at student homes (6-week program starting in July).
  2. Site-based - Assigned Special Education teachers at Apollo-Ridge and Homer-Center School Districts to provide ESY services (5-week program starting in July).
Questions regarding ESY eligibility, program schedules, timetables, and other related issues should be directed to local school district Special Education departments.
