Extended School Year

The ESY Program has annually provided district students with additional school days for student success and to help maintain educational skills between school years. We appreciate your assistance in identifying students in need of ESY services.

To adequately verify and document placement for each student, please have your district complete the online registration form and submit it by the end of March each year.

Thank you for your assistance annually in identifying students in need of ESY services and for providing the appropriate information. Feel free to contact our office if you have any questions regarding this information at (724)463-5300 ext. 1246.
ESY services are special education and related services provided to students with disabilities beyond the framework of the usual school year. The Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA), is a federal special education law that indicates school districts, intermediate units, and charter schools must provide these services if a student requires them to receive a Free Appropriate Public Education (FAPE). In some cases, with summer break, students with disabilities lose skills and have difficulty recouping them when they return to school the following year. ESY services are designed to address such needs.

Individual IEP teams address the need for ESY services during the annual IEP meeting. Eligibility for ESY is determine by specific criteria related to regression and recruitment. Although local districts may access a wide variety of means to provide ESY services, ARIN IU 28 offers site-based programs to assist districts and parents in meeting the need for ESY.

ESY Program:

  1. Site-based - Assigned Special Education teachers, Speech and Language Pathologists, Occupational Therapists and Physical Therapists at Apollo-Ridge, Homer-Center, and Purchase Line School Districts to provide ESY services.
Questions regarding ESY eligibility, program schedules, timetables, and other related issues should be directed to local school district Special Education departments.
